I’d like to remind everyone of the crimes this man is accused of; association in delinquency, embezzlement, aggravated fraud, money laundering, accounting fraud and financial crimes against the public administration. Maybe not all Italians are watching this but I can assure you that five million Sicilians are and they expect to see behaviour that is worthy of this parliament. I remind you that in other countries, people have voluntarily resigned from public office for plagiarising a university thesis.
Only I know the tears I have shed seeing my land plundered by these dubious characters. I had to leave Sicily to study because there were no opportunities there. I did my specialised studies outside Sicily because there was no possibility of doing them at home. I looked for work outside Sicily because there was no hope on my island. Do you know why there was no hope there? All the funds that are sent to Sicily for development and education have always ended up in the wrong hands. Stop feigning surprise and mystifying the reality. I’d like to remind you of your last two Presidents of the Region. Do you remember them? Lombardo and Cuffaro. Both of them were sent to prison. We don’t deserve this humiliation. I will no longer tolerate being labelled a mafioso, a thief, a parasite, often here, in parliament. Nobody should be allowed to humiliate people that are blameless. Sicilians never benefited from those funds. Like bloodsuckers, corrupt politicians have always intercepted the money and stolen it from ordinary, Sicilian citizens.
We are honest, working people but there is a cancer in our society, a cancer we are defeating and a cancer you often defend. You often oppose us in this battle. This place should be an example of honesty and transparency but has for too long been occupied by the corrupt, by thieves, by Mafiosi and delinquents of every kind. Five million people are watching you.
You have placed pictures of my heroes near the president’s office here in parliament, Giovanni Falcone and Paolo Borsellino. Many of you often remind us of the work Giovanni Falcone did and you have named the library after Paolo Borsellino. You should hang your heads in shame since you don’t have the least respect for people who gave their lives for this country.
Boldrini. “Pack it in! Stop!”
Villarosa. I’ve nearly finished.
Boldrini. “Conclude. You have ten seconds”.
Villarosa. If they let me speak. President?
Boldrini. Conclude without provocations. Please.
Villarosa. You should be ashamed of yourselves. Paolo Borsellino had very clear ideas on this. He said that politicians should not only be honest, they must also appear to be honest. But don’t worry, the Five Star Movement only candidates people with a clean track record and we also ask for proof of this.
Boldrini. ‘Stop, please’. ( to protests from other MPs)
Villarosa. What the hell?
Boldrini. We have told him that he can’t say certain things. Continue. We are not making a good impression. Continue’.
Villarosa. You should be ashamed of yourselves. Paolo Borsellino had very clear ideas on this. He said that politicians should not only be honest, they must also appear to be honest. But don’t worry, the Five Star Movement only candidates people with a clean track record and we also ask for proof of this. Finally, we will govern this country and guarantee honesty. Delinquency will become a thing of the past.
